So, I'm writing this email on the actual morning I'm sending it, which I try not to do but, OMG, the last 2 weeks have been a little bit of a shit show.
But, my procrastination paid off because this showed up in my memories on Facebook this morning...
If you've been around for a while, you know that I've talked A LOT about how the first 4-5 years of my business, I basically made no money, and then in 2015, something changed - right?
Well, this dishwasher is when it all changed.
See, from 2010- late 2014, I had ran my web design business while at home with two babies/toddlers and I was charging next to nothing; I was basically just trying to make enough to help pay for groceries and gas and that's really all I was able to do - we definitely couldn't afford extras. We also lived in a pretty large house with a pretty large mortgage for us at the time and the whole things was a struggle.
Then, in 2014, we ended up selling that house and buying my husband's grandmother's old house, which literally cut our house payment by OVER HALF.
That cut in our mortgage payment gave me the ability to take a few months and really figure out my business - where I wanted it to go, what I wanted to do, what I should change - all without having to stress too very much about finances because our cut in mortgage basically made up for the amount of money I was having to make per month.
During that time, I decided to shut down a side hustle I was doing, really double-down on my web design skills, and increase my prices - like a lot.
See, up until this point I had been charging something like $300-$500 for a FULL WEBSITE DESIGN 😳 and obviously that was NOT enough or even remotely in line with industry standard at the time, so, when I had time to think about it, I realized that my prices HAD to go up.
Raising your prices is SCARY. I wanted/needed to raise them to something like $3,000+ for a full web design but that just seemed too insane, so my first step was to go up to $800 for a full website.
I booked a web design client THE DAY AFTER I RAISED MY PRICES!
And I bought this dishwasher.
Remember, we had purchased my husband's Grandmother's home and, fun fact, in the 1970's people definitely didn't install dishwashers, but with two kids and my housekeeping skills - I NEED A DISHWASHER.
Being able to go buy that dishwasher with cash was a HUGE turning point for me. I realized that I COULD charge more and I'd still get clients and I wouldn't constantly be struggling.
I raised my prices several more times in the next few months until I was charging $5000+ per web design when I quit about a year later to pursue my course business/be a content creator.
Without having raised my prices, I wouldn't have gotten a dishwasher, but I also wouldn't have had the white space financially to start my YouTube channel, create my first course, go to my first conference, and all of the other things I did that completely changed my trajectory for the better.
It all started with a dishwasher - for whatever reason, that dishwasher really opened my eyes - I didn't have to always be broke.
I could make good money from home, as a "stay-at-home" Mom.
I could afford extras.
I could work towards goals.
I could charge more and still sell my services/things.
So can you.

To quote Lorelei Gilmore, that is. (Name that episode and you get a digital cookie...it's chocolate chip) Ok, so I wanna share a major revelation I had this week 'cause god knows I don't need to leave it in my brain and my brain alone to collect dust, ha. As creators, as business owners - we are constantly trying to fit ourselves into the "success" formula and we're constantly TRYING SO HARD to make things happen. Like, "Ok, I have seen ____ do X so I'm going to do X and then I'll go viral"...
Okay, you got me, I actually made that up. But really, my goal for 2024? Growth! Growth in all the things. It's been a hot minute since we've sent an email your way, but I wanted to take a moment to recap a couple of things. It's a whole new year. So I've been thinking a lot about my own goals for my business and beyond and what I want to make happen this year! You may have noticed that I've ramped up the YouTube videos, I've got weekly podcast episodes for you to enjoy, weekly blog posts and...
TikTok has been a hot topic this year due to potential bans, privacy concerns, etc. But at the end of the day, TikTok is still an extremely popular app whether you're using it to recreate TikTok dances, content marketing or something in between. It's estimated that TikTok has 50 million daily users, just in the United States. So let's talk a little bit about how to grow on TikTok and why you should consider it! TikTok is still popular and presents a great opportunity for individuals and...
